The Monitor Position Rule
Your monitor should be positioned so the top of the screen is at or slightly below eye level when you're looking straight ahead with good posture. This prevents neck strain and maintains proper spinal alignment.
Distance and Viewing Angle
The ideal viewing distance is an arm's length away—approximately 20-26 inches. Your eyes should make a slight downward angle (about 15 degrees below horizontal) when looking at the center of the screen. This angle reduces eye strain and encourages good posture.
Multiple Monitor Setup
If using multiple monitors, position your primary monitor directly ahead and secondary monitors at an angle. This reduces the need to twist your neck and shoulders throughout the day.
Preventing Screen Fatigue
- Maintain proper distance to reduce eye strain
- Position screen to minimize glare from windows or lights
- Adjust brightness to match ambient light levels
- Use the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look away for 20 seconds
- Consider blue light filters for evening work
Monitor Arm Benefits
A quality monitor arm allows precise height and angle adjustments, making it easy to find your perfect position. It also frees up desk space by moving the monitor base out of the way.
